A new museum for the experience of sound

What is a sound you love?

What is a sound you love?

The National Sound Museum is an emerging American institution devoted to the ways sound shapes memory, identity, culture, science, technology, place, and human connection.

Sound shapes how we understand the world.

Sound can warn us, comfort us, connect us, and return us instantly to another time and place. It can be measured as vibration, preserved as cultural heritage, experienced through the body, transformed through technology, and shared across generations. Yet sound is usually treated as a supporting medium in museums rather than the central subject.

The National Sound Museum will make sound itself the organizing idea of a public museum.

Music will be essential, but the museum’s scope will extend further. It will explore voice and language, hearing and perception, recording and broadcasting, natural and built soundscapes, accessibility, cultural memory, sound art, science, technology, and the future of listening.

The emotional center

Sonostalgia

Sonostalgia is the longing, memory, emotion, and heightened awareness associated with meaningful sound. It describes the pleasure of remembering a beloved sound and the recognition that a voice, place, species, technology, or soundscape may be changing or disappearing.

What is a sound you love?

How does it make you feel?

Why does it matter to you?

What would its loss mean?

A museum designed for active listening

Visitors will not simply observe. They will listen, make, compare, record, question, contribute, and discover how sound creates meaning.

Memory and Sonostalgia

The sounds people love, miss, remember, and want to preserve.

The Body That Listens

Hearing, vibration, perception, Deaf culture, sensory difference, and accessibility.

The Human Voice

Language, storytelling, oral history, protest, accent, identity, and synthetic voices.

National before monumental

The National Sound Museum will begin through prototypes, traveling experiences, digital participation, performances, research, and partnerships. These programs will test the public promise and operating model before decisions about a permanent building are made.

01 — Listen and Test
Research, public engagement, advisors, and a portable Sonostalgia prototype.

02 — Travel and Connect
Temporary installations, programs, digital experiences, and national partnerships.

03 — Build What Works
A permanent institution shaped by evidence, community participation, and demonstrated demand.

Help build a new national platform for listening.

We are seeking founding advisors, philanthropic supporters, cultural partners, researchers, communities, and technology collaborators who want to help shape the museum from its earliest stage.
